Have you ever listened to an artist that caught your attention on the first listen? If so, what was it that made them stand out. Was it their production or song structure? Or was it their ability to create a sound that you felt relatable? For me, I’m always searching for daring artists that make music for the love of their craft. I yearn to escape my everyday life and immerse myself in the art of someone that I have no connection with. This week, I was impressed when I came across the captivating multi-instrumentalist, Bernell Jones II.

Originally from Memphis, TN, Jones II is a New York City-based instrumentalist & saxophonist that has taken the music industry by storm due to his versatility and raw talent. Beginning his musical journey at the age of six, he has continued to grow and elevate his skills with different instruments. He’s a vibe creator, and his musicality is well beyond his years. Now, he debuts on our pages with his debut album “TYPEWRITER”.

“TYPEWRITER” is an experimental Jazz album that takes listeners on a sonic journey that they won’t want to end. The songs are laced with rich sounds, and the instrumentation is captivating. Bernell did everything on the album. He performed, wrote, arranged, and orchestrated it from start to finish. By doing this, you could feel the authenticity in each record. As the album progresses, you can have more of an appreciation of his talents. The album is jazzy, but it also has elements of r&b. I loved how each song was dynamic and produced a groove that brought the essence of soul!

My favorite records from the album were the lead single “Don’t Know Why” & “Fastish”. “Don’t Know Why” is an ear catching song that dives into the topic of heartbreak. For me, I loved how daring and raw the song was. As someone who has been through heartbreak & loss, this was very relatable. In addition, I found the song to evoke raw emotions. The vocals draw you in, and the instrumentation is the cherry on top! “Fastish” showcases his abilities as a saxophonist. The record is groovy, and I loved how dynamic it was. If you want to dance with a glass of wine in your hand, this is the song to do it to.

Overall, “TYPEWRITER” is one of my favorite releases of the year. From start to finish, the album shines. Bernell Jones II is a visionary, and I hope he continues to grow. Although he is still early in his career, he has that “IT” factor. With that being said, stream the album below and vibe out!
