When it comes to musical artistry, versatility has always been something I have kept in the forefront when searching for my favorite artists. For Minnesota-born singer/rapper, Barely Trev, this is something that comes easy. Over the years, Trev has found a way to mesh elements of different genres whether it’s rap, soul, folk, or pop all into one sound that feels as genuine as he is as a person. Within his records, there is a sense of honesty and nostalgia that most artists fail to ever tap into. After releasing his album RUMTLOVE near the end of last year, he has kept fans patiently waiting for his next drop. Now, a couple of months into the new year, he drops an EP titled ‘are you empty, love?’ that is a beautiful extension to the album released last year.
‘On the EP, Trev gives the acoustic versions of standout songs ‘This Trench is a River’, ‘Home’, and a beautifully crafted stripped version of ‘Found Me’. In addition, he also blessed us with two new songs titled ‘portland’ and ‘empty words’. ‘portland’ is a guitar-driven anthem that features Rosie. The song is reminiscent of an early 2000s Matchbox Twenty song that presents us with lush vocals and smooth cadences that will pull at your heartstrings from start to finish. ‘empty words’ featuring oven mint has to be my favorite of the new songs. The song has a folk Esque touch and Trev is heard pouring his heart out. His lyrics are very mature and his ability to make listeners feel each word is what makes this song so relatable. In addition, oven mint meshes well with Trev and the production has so many elements that will pull you in.
If you are looking for music to wind down to, this is the perfect EP for you!

Lyrics That Stick:
”If its Sunday Morning
If I ever saw you like I did again
If we went to Portland
And we let the water guide us to the end”
