Although I listen to music on a daily basis, I love the feeling of finding innovative sounds that make me fall in love with the music discovery process again. This week, I was blessed to come across the Sydney-based duo Salarymen. With little to no knowledge of the duo, I was instantly captivated by their dreamy yet forward sounding music. I will admit that I was so intrigued that I had to spotlight their latest record “Rerun” on our pages.
“Rerun” is a poignant self-produced record that meshes dream-pop with psych infused elements that make you feel like you are floating over the song’s duration. The lead vocalist, Renee de la Motte, captivates with her ethereal melodies that are brought to life by the bittersweet chord progressions and spacey layered synths. Her vocal delivery is exceptional and the song is full of interesting elements sonically. Renee even gave a deeper meaning behind the song by saying:
"This song is about longing for a place you desperately need to get back to, while you’re stuck somewhere else. The lyrics reflect the stress of being separated from those you love, and the sense of tension that builds up inside of you and starts to drive you a little crazy. The last two years have felt a bit like groundhog day, and that starts to eat away at your mental health after a while”.
Overall, Renee & producer Thom Eagleton have proven once again that they have something fresh and relatable to present to listeners. With “Rerun”, they gave us a song that feels like a dream that we can’t escape, and I’ll be the first to say that I don’t know if I want to escape. With that being said, stream the video for the song above that was directed by Todd Stephen Logan and vibe out!
