Canadian musician and composer, Nemo Lakes, has been on a hot run lately. After impressing us with his singles “NASCAR B.B.” & “Piggy Bank”, we have regarded him as one of our “Artists To Watch” for this upcoming year. Now, he returns to our pages with his latest single “Ugly Face!”, and it serves as the last single before his debut album.
Nemo Lakes is the alter-ego of Tyler Simpson, and he uses this identity to show what lies beneath. Nemo is intricate and his inspirations are drawn from the electric-indie pop style of the Gorillaz and the rock inspired hip-hop of Kid Cudi amongst many others. On his latest track “Ugly Face!”, Nemo meshes all his influences into one innovative sound, and it may be my favorite song of the year. The track is a three-part manifesto, projecting different messages Nemo wants to project to the world. Overall, he shines sonically and his vocals are exceptional. Nemo Lakes can transcend genres with his production and lyricism and is beyond his years in the complexity of his music. He thrives in his live performance and has performed a slew of headlining shows as well as supporting shows in Los Angeles over the past 7 months. This single is the final piece of the picture he wants to paint for fans before his project release before the end of the year.
