With the influence of heavy metal and grunge in the current music landscape, artists such as Zero 9:36 have continued to pioneer a sound that is slowly growing again. With his ability to mesh the sounds with his emotional lyrics, he combines a sound that is hard not to resist. It’s dark, it’s raw, and it is real. After several releases in 2020, Zero returns with the release of his new album ‘…If You Don’t Save Yourself’.

The song that stood out to us the most was ‘Take Me Instead’. With its heavy metal layered drums and stacked guitars, the hook packs a punch that will make you feel everything the rising star is feeling. In addition, the song feels like a grunge hybrid due to the fact that there are elements of Hip-Hop that are in the verses. Zero’s ability to blend the different sounds makes this song an early favorite for me. Although the production elements will catch your ear earlier on, his lyricism is top tier. His ability to be vulnerable gives an introspective look into someone wanting to take the place of another person they know is in pain. The song is relatable, and it has me wanting to listen to the rest of the album. With that being said, stream this song ASAP!

Lyrics That Stick

“What is my free will if I lie helpless?

I want all of the pain, I'm selfish

All my real ones, I know that they felt this

Pain that's endless”
