marinelli - Christmas

Hailing from Watsonville, CA - the same town that brought us Martinelli’s Apple Juice - is marinelli, a twenty-something scion of the bedroom movement that’s taken over the Pop space these past few years. His production calms as much as it induces nausea when paired with his soft-spoken lyrics. His latest release, “Christmas” marks the fourth single we’ve seen from marinelli this year, and while each of the tracks ring distinctly ‘marinelli’ it’s clear that the young talent is getting better and better with each release.

This song is about the ebb and flow between loneliness and solitude. I wrote the line “Don’t kiss me, I have a cold/ it’s New Year’s Eve and I feel old” on the beach on New Year’s Eve this year when I was watching all of my friends in relationships kiss each other when I was alone. I wrote the line about Valentine’s Day on Valentine’s Day as well.

He’s clearly no-nonsense when it comes to the business end of things as well, raking in almost two million streams since 2020 started, and with it his solo effort. Whether it’s his own music or his collaborators’ marinelli always comes correct, and with friends like spill tab. he’s clearly on the right path to take over 2021.

The verses are more about the frustration of feeling lonely and misunderstood. The confusing thing is that most people feel that way and that doesn’t seem to bring us together. When you put it that way, this song sounds like a fucking bummer.

Lyrics That Stick:

“Don’t kiss me I have a cold

It’s New Years Eve and I feel old

Don’t hold my hand I broke my thumb

It’s Valentine’s Day and I feel numb.”
