When it comes to music discovery, there is no better feeling than finding a captivating new artist. This week I was blessed when I came across rising singer-songwriter Roswell. Roswell is a daring artist that brings all the nostalgia. The burgeoning singer has a rawness that will make want to relive your adolescent years. After impressing me with his single “without u”, he enters our pages with his album “uglyboi”.
“uglyboi” is an angsty album that details the bittersweet ending to a tumultuous relationship. Roswell strips back his layers and bears it all. His self-reflective lyrics depict the trauma that comes from feeling ugly. It’s almost like a curse. Whether you feel ugly literally or figuratively, Roswell details his inner feelings that come from a love defining situation. Over the 20-track album, Roswell is at his best vocally. His tone and delivery are exceptional. In addition, I loved the album sonically. From the song arrangements to the cohesion of the album, “uglyboi” is ahead of its time.
My favorite songs on the album were “Pornography”, “Nukehead”, & “Neighborhood”. “Pornography” featuring Noah Markham is an absolute banger. It is carried by a “headie” hook, and I loved the production. “Nukehead” featuring Noah Markham is one of the best structured songs on the album. Sonically, it has a late 2000’s indie-pop & alternative feel that reminds me of The Naked and Famous. There’s a youthful & nostalgic feel that pulls you in. “Neighborhood” featuring Noah Markham is the best record on this album. I loved the warmth of the sonics. The laid-back feel sets the tone of the record. “Neighborhood” is laced with lush melodies, engaging instrumentation, and the hook is otherworldly. Noah Markham impressed me in each of the records. Cementing himself as an artist to watch. Roswell is the burgeoning star that you need in your playlists! Stream his album below and vibe out.
