With roots that trace back to Toronto, Ontario, electro-pop sensation, Kylo, has been captivating audiences with her innovative sound. She is eclectic, raw, and her sound is daring. Kylo has this innate ability to craft records that create musical experiences that you won’t want to forget as a listener. With her enchanting vocals, emotive lyrics, and genre-bending sonics, her records are mesmerizing works of art. Garnering more attention, Kylo has entered our pages with her latest EP “Retrospect”.

“Retrospect” is 5-track EP that explores the emotions, heartache, and the nostalgia of departing one’s twenties. As someone that is currently going through these emotions, this project took me on a sonic journey that made me feel completely seen. Growing older is an emotional filled experience, and we all react to it differently. Kylo does an incredible job at depicting these emotions in hindsight. She highlights the highs & lows, and the growth that comes with entering a new stage in life.

From a lyrical standpoint, I found her cadences and subject matter to be exceptional. Sonically, each record builds on the next, and they all fit into the overall meaning of the project. Nowadays, most EP’s sound more like a collection of songs. “Retrospect” has this cohesion that makes you want to keep listening. This is what Kylo has to say about the project:

"This EP is the embodiment of "Retrospect." Being stuck still and hitting 30, I was unable to do anything but look back at what I have accomplished in my life, who I had been with, and past life experiences that led me to where I am today. Seeing it all come to fruition now makes me feel relieved and excited at the same time, making the good, bad, and ugly experiences totally worth it."

For me, the standout records are “Sunsets” & “Closer”. “Closer” is synth-laced record that is carried by cantering percussion, lush melodies, and a “heady” hook that will keep you engaged. “Sunsets” is an introspective record that features Shadrack Jackman. I loved the sonic arrangement and the emotional topics discussed in the harmony-rich duet. Overall, this has been one of the best projects I have heard all year. For anyone that will be in Toronto on December 13th, make sure to catch Kylo playing at The Drake Underground. Check out the EP below!
