New York rapper & vocalist Raymond Xu Vlog is an artist that NEEDS to be in your rotation. After sustaining a high-level commercial presence in 2021 due to the release of his chart-topping single “Trapped in Ithaca”, he was catapulted into the mainstream. He received mentions from the likes of Drake, Rihanna, and Taylor Swift. After his initial success from dropping more comedic singles, the rising artist decided to take his music more seriously & change directions as an artist. Now, his latest album “I am no longer trying to be funny” is a new sonic journey that he has presented to us. Although there is maturity, the album is still offbeat, weird, and he’s speaking his truth.
The 8-track album is abrasive, comedic, direct, and strikingly entertaining. He doesn’t play by the rules, and he allows his audience to step into the mind of a liberated man. “I am no longer trying to be funny” paints a vivid PICTURE of Raymond Xu Vlog’s growth and maturity as an artist. he has refined is songwriting, vocal deliver, and he has a keen ear for production. It’s one of the most liberating projects I have heard this year, and I consider it a timeless masterpiece. The project is raw, innovative, and it is refreshing compared to everything else out. My favorite singles on the project were “I do not want to go outside”, “I won’t make pop music”, & “I wouldn’t kiss an Asian guy”. For me, I truly appreciate the freedom and personality on this album. In an industry that favors virality and branding, you can’t overlook the brains behind the burgeoning star. With that being said, stream the project below!
