In today’s music industry, it is very rare that I come across an artist that stands the test of time. Although I can blame it on oversaturation, I feel as if artists aren’t connecting to the listeners like they used to. Growing up, hearing a new song from your favorite artist was euphoric, and it served as a timestamp to one of the best moments of your life. When it came to the music, the songs and albums were pure and there were no shortcuts taken. From the sonics to the vocals, music was alive and well. Though I sometimes get lost in the blandness and plastic sound of today’s industry, there are a few artists that are still releasing groundbreaking music. I recently came across an exceptional artist that goes by the name Matthew Mullings.

Hailing from Ottawa, Ontario, the emerging rapper-producer has taken the industry by storm. He’s raw, captivating, and his flows exceptional. As a rapper in today’s music industry, originality is everything. I’m looking for innovators and artists with a refreshing sound. Matthew Mullings has that. His sound is cinematic and universal, and I personally believe he has that “IT” factor. Now, he enters our pages with his latest album, “Short Films”.

“Short Films” is a cinematic album that uses film references as its bassline. Sonically, this is some of the best production I have heard this year, and I was surprised to learn that some of these were self-produced. This only tells me that he has a keen ear for sound. With project being mixed and mastered by him, it allows the project to have a personal touch that I think is needed for the album’s overall purpose. Over the 11-tracks, he discussed his own personal life experiences, and I loved how he relates his experiences to short films. Personally, I consider this album to be his magnum opus, and it is a masterpiece.

My favorite songs were “18 Years.”, “sometimes”, & “You’ll Never Catch Me…”. I feel like those songs encapsulate his sound as a whole, and they also show his innate ability to evoke raw emotions with his music. My favorite lyrics from the album were, “My life is a series of short films/This life’s a series of short films.” I just found that line to be so captivating, and it shows his confidence and ability to story tell. Overall, this is one of my favorite albums of 2024. With that being said, stream the album below and vibe out!
