If you are in need of new music to add to your rotation, dive into the punk & psychedelic inspired album “Nothing To Do” by Jovi Skyler.

Hailing from Australia, the rising artist has been building a dedicated fanbase due to his sound that can be described as alternative rock with 90s spirit. With years of experience, he has refined that sound and added elements of punk with a twist of psychedelia. Skyler’s music is direct, passionate, and I find it to be very genuine. That is why he has become so easy to connect with.

Although I’m fairly new to his discography, the emerging singer-songwriter isn’t new to releasing music. He has gained traction with his self-titled debut EP in 2020, and he has released a spree of impressive singles that followed. The release of “Danger Land” and “Tattoos” were hailed by tastemakers and fans alike. The tracks honed Jovi’s ability to craft his own psychedelic music videos with a DIY ethic during the lockdowns in Sydney. It also shifted Skyler’s focus towards some of the real issues that people are dealing with. Now, over 2-3 years later, he enters our pages with his electrifying debut album “Nothing To Do”.

The album is the culmination of all the years of holding his thoughts back. Skyler feels free as an artist, and you can tell from his rebellious lyricism. As an artist, you have a responsibility to speak your truth, and I applaud anyone that can live up to this. Over the 10-track album, Skyler delivers a vocal masterclass shaped by innovative production, socio-cultural observations, and larger than life choruses. Although I loved the album through & through, my favorite songs were “If You Think So”, “Nervosa”, & “Got It Wrong”.

“If You Think So” is an introspective record that explores the ebbs & flows of falling into a tumultuous relationship that can be mentally taxing. The record is controversial that helps convey the idea of a relationship going nowhere fast. It’s the perfect intro song and it is laced with engaging percussion and captivating melodies. “Nervosa” is a top-tier record. In my opinion, it is the song of the summer. The record is laced with warm synths, an ear-worm hook, & it’s perfect for driving around with the top down. It’s my favorite record from the project. Lastly, I have to give a shout-out to “Got It Wrong”. “Got It Wrong” is a dynamic record, that is laced with mesmerizing vocal melodies and textures. I love the movement of this song. The lyrics are captivating, and I must say, these 3 songs set the tone for the entire album. Overall, this is one of my favorite albums of the year so press play below.
