When it comes to genre-defying artists, Tillman is one of the most-promising singers out right now. Drawing influence from icons like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, and Michael Jackson, as well as alternative acts like Radiohead and Coldplay, James’s music traverses the boundaries of traditional R&B. Tillman can’t be put into a box, and his ability to blend various influences into one unique sound shows his talent. Although I’m new to his sound, the veteran artist has continued to bless fans with music for over a decade. Now, he debuts on our pages with his latest EP “‘SENSES Vol. 2’.
‘SENSES Vol. 2,’ is a captivating EP that dives into themes of human connection, emotional vulnerability, and the urgency of breaking through the guardedness that has come to define modern life, especially in the wake of the pandemic. From start to finish, I found myself connecting to each record. There is a relatability to the project that I have yet to hear from anything recently. The sonics were engaging, the vocals were exceptional, and the lyrics evoked raw emotions out of me. With production coming from Eddie Burns (Omar Apollo, Dominic Fike) and William Corduroy, ‘SENSES Vol. 2’ is a reminder that we are so much more. It leaves us knowing that we are living beings with feelings and emotions that deserve to be shown. Personally, this album has inspired me to be more present, and I feel like I have connected more with myself than ever before. This is what Tillman had to say about the album:
BOTD: What inspired the EP?
Tillman: The SENSES EP series gives me a chance to experiment and explore new sounds in a more relaxed state, in contrast to my album releases which are more detailed and methodical. For SENSES VOL. 2 I wanted to experiment with song structures and create a project that evokes a wide range of emotions.
BOTD: What do you want listeners to take from the project?
Tillman: I want listeners to really tap into their emotional state as they listen to the new music. We live in a world that is so robotic and artificial. I want listeners to feel something, but ultimately feel more human after experiencing the project.
BOTD: Your personal favorite song?
Tillman: ‘Note to Self.’ We all need a reminder sometimes
BOTD: What is next for you as an artist?
Tillman: I am currently in collaboration with some of my friends and favorite artists. I am finishing up a new album so I am excited to see that world come to life and to tour and play out the new music.
When it comes to records, my favorite songs were ‘i no u no’ & ‘sunshine’. To add to the release, James unveiled a visual for the EP’s lead single, ‘i no u no’. The visual has a day in the life approach, and it captures everyday moments. I found it to be very authentic, and it gave a close look into the world of James. With that being said, stream his new project below and vibe out!
