Phora - heartbreak hotel (Album Review)

Valentine’s Day is known for being a day of appreciation and love for those that we hold closest to our hearts. It’s a day of giving, and it’s also notorious for the widespread affection that one shares with that special someone. With that being said, musical artists have had a habit of dropping music that is love or heartbreak related around this intimate holiday.
California based rapper, Phora, came correct this Valentine’s Day with his new project ‘heartbreak hotel’. The seven-track project displays Phora’s ability to craft brutally honest songs that lyrically touch on topics of love, heartbreak, and mental health.
For me, ‘heartbreak hotel’ really gives an introspective look into his psyche, and it shows his growth over the years. It is hard to be completely transparent when it comes to music, but Phora makes it look and sound easy. He has a way of connecting his thoughts and his feelings that make listeners understand that their pain is his pain as well. When I listen to this, I feel less alone. Songs like ‘im scared of falling in love’ stick out to me because he doesn’t hold back. He talks about how it’s hard to share his inner pain, and how holding his feelings in has kept him from loving himself. We see Phora deal with drinking issues, and his inability to cope with situations on his own. With Destiny Rogers being the only feature on the project, we get a closer look into who Phora is trying to be. This album deserves every listen, and it is up there with our favorite projects of the year. Make sure to stream it below!

Lyrics That Stick:
”I saw darkness in her beauty,
She saw beauty in my darkness
She freed me from my heart,
But I'm still trapped inside my conscious”
