After years of anticipation, theatrics, livestreams, and controversy, Kanye West finally blessed fans with his latest album “Donda”. The album coins the same name of West’s late-mother, and the project is a 27 track musical experience that features artists such as Jay-Z, The Weeknd, Baby Keem, the late Pop Smoke, Kid Cudi, and many more. “Donda” comes right after West’s 3rd listening party that took place in Chicago and featured appearances from Marilyn Manson and DaBaby.
As an overall project, “Donda” is both mesmerizing due to its production elements but it also feels overstuffed due to it clocking in at just under 2 hours of runtime. Although it is hard to judge a 27 track album off of one listen, on the album it seems like the clear focus is about his mother, his inner demons, Kim Kardashian, and naturally Drake!
My favorite records from the project have to be “Jail”, “Heaven and Hell” and “Hurricane”. On “Jail”, West with the help of Jay-Z discuss original sin and it takes a deeper dive into Christian humility. The song is a pop-alt rock song driven by power chords and anthemic choruses that I could see any punk band dying for! “Hurricane” is another song that had an impact on me due to the feature from The Weeknd. The single feels pure due to the fact that it feels like The Weeknd knew the assignment coming into the feature and he laid a chorus that feels comparable to anything he would release on his projects. Overall, the album is very long and will take time to listen to but there are some gems on it that show Kanye’s greatness as a a rapper and producer. With that being said, check out the iconic project below and get caught up on everything Kanye!!
